VAGINA
Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina that can result in discharge, itching, pain, and discomfort. It’s a common condition and may be caused by infection, hormonal changes, or irritants.
Types of Vaginitis:
1. Bacterial Vagina (BV)
Cause: Overgrowth of certain bacteria in the vagina.
Symptoms: Thin, grayish discharge with a fishy odor.
Treatment: Antibiotics like metronidazole or clindamycin.
2. Yeast Infection (Candidiasis)
Cause: Overgrowth of Candida (a fungus).
Symptoms: Thick, white, “cottage cheese-like” discharge; itching and redness.
Treatment:
Antifungal creams or oral fluconazole.
3. Trichomoniasis
Cause: A sexually transmitted parasite (Trichomonas vaginalis).
Symptoms:
Frothy, yellow-green discharge; bad odor; irritation.
Treatment: Oral metronidazole.
4. Atrophic Vaginitis
Cause: Decreased estrogen, often post-menopause.
Symptoms: Vaginal dryness, irritation, discomfort during sex.
Treatment: Estrogen creams or tablets.
5. Noninfectious Vaginitis
Cause: Allergens or irritants (e.g., soaps, detergents, sprays).
Symptoms: Itching, burning, irritation without infection.
Treatment: Remove irritants, use soothing creams.
General Symptoms of Vaginitis:
Vaginal itching or burning
Pain during urination or intercourse
Abnormal vaginal discharge
Redness or swelling
Odor (especially with BV or trichomoniasis)
When to See a Doctor:
First-time symptoms
Symptoms persist or worsen
Recurring infections
Unusual discharge, especially with odor or discomfort
